Completing this CBT course allows you to ride a 50cc (age 16) or up to 125cc (age 17+) Motorcycle/ scooter on learner plates, for 2 years, If you haven't passed a "L" plate riding test you will need to renew the CBT to continue riding on learner plates.

(Riding with a CBT you have to have 2 'L' Plates on view one on the front and one on the rear of your motorcycle/scooter. you are NOT allowed to carry a pillion passenger and you are NOT allowed on motorways.)

A GUIDE TO THE MOTORCYCLE LICENCE

This now appears to be quite a complex subject to get “your head round” but is actually reasonably straightforward and I hope to make it as simple as possible. It is all based around age limits and CC/BHP/KW limits. The manufacturers tend to use CC/KW limits, in the training field we tend to use CC/BHP much easier to understand (any manufacturers tech specs will include BHP/KW).

So here we go: Licence groups, this is what you can ride yourself on the road with (bear with me on this one!)

AM/P/Q: basically these are all 50cc mopeds: can all be ridden from 16 years upwards.

AM: speed Max 28MPH

P: speed Max 30 MPH

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) certificate required: YES

Full car licence prior to 1st February 2001 (no CBT required if you have full moped licence, full car licence post 2001 CBT required)

A1: 125cc, max 15BHP (11KW) can be ridden from 17years upwards.

CBT certificate required: YES (by all riding regardless of car licence history)

That covers what you can ride on without an instructor and on provisional licence or full car licence.

Simply: 16 on AM (CBT see above)

17 on A1 (CBT required)

TEST REQUIREMENTS: this section covers what you can ride for a test and after you have passed a test.

Test requirements for all regardless of age and car licence.

CBT (valid), Theory test required, 2 part riding test Module 1 & 2.

16 years up: AM : CBT cert, Theory test cert: Mod 1&2 tests completed: 50cc this is all you can ride.

17 years up: A1: CBT cert, theory test cert: Mod 1 & 2 tests completed: 50cc/125cc this is all you can ride.

19 years up: A2: CBT cert, theory test cert: Mod1 & 2 tests completed: you can ride any cc motorcycle max output.

47BHP (max power 95BHP restricted to 47BHP). After 2 years Category A upgrade avail .

24 years up: A: CBT cert, theory test cert: Mod1 & 2 tests completed: you can ride any cc/BHP motorcycle without restrictions.*

*21 years+: held a cat A2 licence 2 years can then upgrade to DAS (cat A) upon completion Mod 1&2 on Cat A motorcycle.
